Comparison

Mylands or Flamant?

A manufactory and a collection: two different ways of making a premium paint. Mylands (London, 1884, family-owned) makes and tints its own Marble Matt Emulsion — 3% sheen, class 1 washable, 15 m²/L — sold at €121.00 for 2.5 L. Flamant (Belgium, 1978) is an interiors house whose 128 colours are produced by Tollens, part of the Cromology group: its Wall Matt, a deep matt under 1 gloss unit covering 9–11 m²/L, sells from €98 for 2.5 L in Tollens stores and Flamant shops. Here is the detail, figures included.

The starting point

Two decorating worlds, one standard for colour

If you are torn between Mylands and Flamant, you are after a decorator's colour rather than a DIY-store shade: complex neutrals, warm greys, greens and blues that hold a room, in a deep matt that does not reflect. On that point the two houses are alike. Both formulate in water, with a very low VOC content and the A+ label; both built their palettes for interior architecture; both offer a wall matt, a matt lacquer for woodwork and a satin.

The fundamental difference lies elsewhere: Mylands is a manufacturer — the Myland family formulates, grinds, tints and tins in its London manufactory — whereas Flamant is a colour publisher whose paint is produced by Tollens, a brand of the Cromology group. That does not make one better than the other; it changes what you are buying, the coverage, the price and how you buy. That is what the table below sets side by side.

What makes the difference

Where Mylands stands out

01

A maker, not a publisher

At Mylands the house that signs the colour is the one that makes it: formulation, pigment grinding, Carrara marble, tinting and tinning all happen in the same West Norwood manufactory, since 1884. At Flamant the colour is designed in Belgium and the paint produced by Tollens. That is no fault — Tollens is a serious manufacturer — but it is a different thing you are buying.

02

A third more square metres

Up to 15 m² per litre against 9–11 stated for Wall Matt: on 40 m² of wall in two coats, that is 5.3 L of Mylands against 7.3–8.9 L of Flamant. Set against the tin price — €121.00 against €98 and up — cost per square metre, the real figure, tilts towards Mylands. Our Mylands paint prices page works it out live.

03

A class 1 matt that washes

Marble Matt Emulsion reaches class 1 wet-scrub resistance (EN 13300), the top rating — a figure the Wall Matt sheet does not publish. Fingermarks and splashes sponge off without burnishing the surface, and the wall is touch-dry in 1–2 h and recoatable after 3–4 h, against 4 and 8 h for Wall Matt: a job finished in a day.

04

Supplier to the Crown, painter to the studios

A Royal Warrant granted by Elizabeth II in 1985 and renewed by Charles III; the paint of British film sets since 1928. Two references that demand tin-to-tin colour consistency — and recipes archived since the beginning.

In all honesty

Where Flamant keeps the edge

A Tollens store near you

This is the trump card: Tollens has stores across France, and Flamant its own shops. You see the colour card, leave with a tin tinted on the spot, and come back for the missing litre on Saturday morning. Mylands France sells online, with a free colour card and sample pots delivered to your door — a different model, without the shop window.

A complete world, from sofa to wall

Flamant is first an interiors house: furniture, fabrics, lighting, accessories — and a paint designed to go with all of it. If you furnish in Flamant, the coherence is immediate. Mylands devotes itself to paint and wood finishes; matching the furniture is up to you.

The deepest matt in the table

With a specular gloss below 1 at 85°, Wall Matt sits below Marble Matt Emulsion's 3%: a highly absorbent, siloxane-reinforced matt that hides the flaws of an old wall. Its depolluting Air Care technology and EU Ecolabel are two arguments Mylands does not claim.

Deciding

How to choose between the two

Choose Mylands if you want to buy paint from a maker who formulates and tints it, if you want a deep matt that is also class 1 washable in a room that gets lived in, if coverage and price per square metre matter, or if you are after a bespoke shade or a colour match. Choose it too for colour drenching: the Multi-Surface Dead Matt dresses walls, woodwork and radiators in a single matt.

Choose Flamant if you want to walk out of a Tollens store with your tin, if you already decorate in Flamant and want the perfect match with your furniture, or if the siloxane ultra-matt and the EU Ecolabel weigh in your decision. Either way, test before you order: a sample pot brushed onto two walls and watched morning and evening settles the question more reliably than any comparison. All our comparisons are gathered on one page.

A colour in mind?

Finding a Flamant shade at Mylands

We do not publish a table of "equivalents" between the two colour cards: Flamant colour names belong to the brand, and two different formulas never give exactly the same result under the same light. What our colour team can do is match a bespoke shade from a painted sample, a fabric or an object — a skill inherited from the film studios, and something Flamant's closed card does not offer.

The simplest method is still to start from the colour family you love — a greyed linen, a water green, a warm grey — and order two or three Mylands sample pots within it. The digital colour card and the visualiser help you shortlist; the wall does the rest.

Frequently asked

What we are asked most often

Is Mylands cheaper than Flamant?

By the tin, no: €121.00 incl. VAT for 2.5 L of Marble Matt Emulsion on mylands.fr, from €98 for 2.5 L of Flamant Wall Matt at Tollens (September 2026). Per square metre, yes: 15 m²/L stated against 9–11, a third less paint to buy for the same area. Our Mylands paint prices page works out cost per square metre in two coats, live.

Is Flamant paint made by Flamant?

No: the collection is called "Flamant by Tollens". Flamant, a Belgian interiors house founded in 1978, designs the 128 colours; Tollens, a brand of the Cromology group (owned by DuluxGroup, a Nippon Paint subsidiary, since January 2022), formulates and makes the paint — the Wall Matt data sheet is issued by Cromology Services in Clichy. Mylands, by contrast, formulates and makes every tin itself in its London manufactory.

Is Wall Matt more matt than Marble Matt Emulsion?

Yes: Tollens states a specular gloss below 1 at 85° for Wall Matt, where Marble Matt Emulsion shows 3% sheen. To the eye both are deep, reflection-free matts. The difference is in care and coverage: the Wall Matt sheet publishes no wet-scrub class and Tollens points to Lack Matt for busy rooms; Marble Matt Emulsion is rated class 1 (EN 13300) and covers 15 m²/L against 9–11.

Can the two brands be mixed on one job?

Yes, provided you keep one brand per surface: a Mylands wall and a Flamant door sit together without difficulty, both being water-based paints. Avoid layering the two on the same substrate without a primer, and do not expect an exact colour match between two manufacturers — even under a similar colour name.

Does Mylands make bespoke shades, as one sometimes asks a decorator?

Yes. The Flamant card is closed — 128 shades, no bespoke — whereas Mylands, heir to a century of film sets, matches a colour from a sample, a fabric or an object and archives it to remake it identically. Ask our colour team before you order.
