Colour trends 2027: Huguenot No.49, Mylands' Colour of the Year, and the shades on the rise

Mylands' Colour of the Year 2027 is Huguenot No.49, a deep crimson red with subtle blue undertones, announced on 16 September 2026. Around it, the other manufacturers' announcements trace four movements for 2027: greens (from celery to moss), greyed mid blues, terracottas and clay pinks, and deep reds. Not a neutral among them. The matching Mylands shades are below, with the finish and primer to plan for.

Colour of the Year 2027

Huguenot No.49: a deep crimson, brown in shadow, red in light

Huguenot takes its name from the Huguenot weavers' houses of Spitalfields, in east London, whose façades inspired this dark red. It is a deep crimson, brown and velvety in shadow, more frankly red in full light, with a touch of blue that keeps it from turning to brick. Its light reflectance is around 7%: a colour that absorbs light and wraps the room, not one that brightens it.

Mylands describes it as rich, warm and quietly confident — a colour to make your own rather than a trend to follow. Dominic Myland, who runs the family manufactory, sums it up as expressive without ever overwhelming.

01

Where to paint it

The sitting room and dining room, where it builds evening intimacy; the bedroom, where it cocoons. It is also remarkable on kitchen cabinetry — an island, base units, a bookcase, a dresser — or as a detail inside a cupboard or an alcove.

02

In which finish

Marble Matt Emulsion on walls, for the depth of the mineral matt; Multi-Surface Dead Matt, Eggshell, Satin or Gloss on joinery and furniture, depending on the sheen you want. Under deep reds, the Dark Red primer saves a coat and gives the red its full saturation.

03

What to pair it with

Whitehall No.9, a white touched with yellow ochre, for a crisp contrast; Holland Park No.5 for a softer white; Clerkenwell No.21 and Hoxton Grey No.72 for a fuller palette that answers its blue undertone. And materials: natural wood, aged brass, stone, heavy textiles.

The 2027 landscape

What the other 2027 Colours of the Year say

Manufacturers announce their colour of the year between late August and November. These were known on 22 September 2026; Benjamin Moore, Farrow & Ball and Little Greene had not yet spoken.

Manufacturer 2027 colour Family
Mylands (London) Huguenot No.49 Deep crimson red
Sherwin-Williams (US) Celery SW 6421 Yellowish apple green
Behr (US) Grounded T27-01 Mossy olive green, brown-based
Dulux (UK) Soulful Sage Pale sage
Valspar (US) Cottage Door 8004-38E Greyed powder blue
Glidden (US) Artifact Smoky blue
Dutch Boy (US) Deep Rooted 311-7DB Terracotta
Graham & Brown (UK) Rose Earth Dusty clay pink

The overall reading is clear: after a decade of grey and greige, 2027 returns to colours that come from nature and carry an emotion — "grounded", "calming", "authentic" recur in every release. The trend consultancy Colour Hive links Mylands' choice to a wider move towards rich, warm reds.

Four movements

The four movements of 2027, and the Mylands shades that answer them

01

Greens, from celery to moss

Green is no longer an accent; it is the new room background. For a fresh, yellowish green in the spirit of Celery: French Green on kitchen walls, New Lime on a door or a piece of furniture. For a deep moss green close to Grounded: Sorrel Green and Messel, superb as a colour drench. For a pale sage: Beauvais and Hurlingham.

No regrets

Adopting a 2027 colour without regretting it in 2029

A colour of the year is a direction, not an obligation. Three simple rules.

  • Test it at home, in two coats, on at least two walls and at three different hours: our method for testing a colour.
  • Choose the dose: a deep red can cover a whole dining room or only the inside of a bookcase, and both are right.
  • Think finish before colour: a red in Marble Matt is velvet, the same red in Gloss is lacquer — not two colours, but two different rooms. To wrap everything in one shade, see colour drenching.
