Decorating ideas & inspiration in green
No colour ties the house to the outdoors like green: sage, olive, bottle or forest, it calms every room it enters — and carries brass, timber and terracotta beautifully.
From hushed kitchens to enveloping bathrooms, our green schemes run the shade from its most tender to its deepest.
“Green is the colour the eye knows by heart: it rests from everything.”
Choosing a green: from sage to deep forest
Green is the original colour of nature, and that is probably why it is the easiest to live with: the eye accepts it across a whole room the way it would accept foliage. In recent years it has overtaken deep blue as the favourite colour for rooms meant to feel enveloping.
For a soft, restful green — bedrooms, bathrooms, studies — Glass BH.09, Damp Leaf BH.14 and Sprig JB.06 are our quietest shades, barely coloured, lovely with pale timber. Sorrel Green No.207 and French Green No.187 step up towards the classic sage green that works as well on woodwork as on walls.
For a green that commits, Copper Green No.36 and Pleasure Gardens Green No.214 bring liveliness without aggression. And for genuinely enveloping rooms, our deep greens: Deep Green FTT-012, Forest BH.16 and CSO Green FTT-011 — taken across walls, ceiling and woodwork in a single shade, they create those dark, comfortable interiors you don't want to leave once evening comes.
Greens pair naturally with pale stones: Limestone No.55 on the ceiling, Frieze No.84 on the skirtings. See also our bathroom ideas, living room ideas and neutral colours, or browse all our green paints.
