Our paint
Exceptional pigments, recipes proven since 1884, and a manufactory that has never left London: this is what goes into every Mylands tin — and why it shows on your walls.
A short history
Born in 1884, never reinvented — refined
It all begins with an honest man. In 1884, John Myland — « Honest John » to his customers — opened a shop in Lambeth, south London, selling French polish, varnishes and colours. The capital's cabinetmakers and gilders flocked to it: the recipes were true, the materials sincere, his word kept.
Six generations later, the same family still makes the same thing in the same place: colour. The recipe books have grown thicker — the film studios in 1928, the Royal Warrant in 1985, the 120 « Colours of London » shades in 2012 — but the method has not moved: exceptional pigments, patiently measured, in proven formulas.
Mylands is today the last paint maker in London, and the oldest in Britain still in the hands of its founding family.

Substance first
What goes into the tin
A paint is only as good as what goes into it. Ours are ground from natural earths and minerals, richly measured — it is that density of pigment that gives Mylands colours their singular depth under the light.
Natural pigments
Natural earths and minerals, generously measured to the house recipes: deep, nuanced colours that live with the daylight instead of going flat.
Crushed Carrara marble
Our emulsions carry crushed Carrara marble — reclaimed from the stone industry's offcuts — for a tougher film, a denser body and a mineral touch.
Water-based, low VOC
All our decorative paints are water-based: discreet odour, quick drying, brushes washed without solvent. Low in VOCs and compliant with the EN 71-3 toy standard, they are suited to children's bedrooms.
Made to last
Class 1 wet-scrub resistance (EN 13300) on our wall matts, breathable films that let old masonry live: recipes formulated for longevity — our definition of sustainability.
From deep matt to high gloss
A texture for every surface
Colour sets the mood; the finish sets the texture. From the velvet of a deep matt to the shine of a full gloss, every Mylands finish is designed for its surface — walls, woodwork, metal, floors or façades — and many work across several of them.

Find your finishLondon, England
One manufactory, always
Every tin is born in West Norwood. In our south London works, pigments are weighed, binders prepared and every shade checked by expert eye and by machine — before the tins are filled, sealed and labelled on site. No outsourced manufacture, no production licences: what bears the Mylands name leaves our walls.
That integrated making is our best argument for quality. It gives us command of every ingredient, from pigment drum to finished tin — and lets Dominic Myland, fifth generation, and his son Harvey, sixth, watch over the recipes the way one watches over an inheritance.
The art of the true colour
Colour mixing
A Mylands colour is not approximated: it is reached. Every shade is mixed at the manufactory to the house recipe — pigment by pigment — then checked against its master standard, by expert eye and by machine, before it leaves. That is why a tin ordered today matches the one from yesterday.
Behind every colour sit the archives: recipe books kept without interruption since 1884, from which the 120 « Colours of London » shades were born. And if your project's colour does not exist yet, our colour team can create or match it bespoke — a craft of the house, inherited from the film studios.
