Decorating ideas & inspiration in blue
From misty blue to midnight, this is the shade of serene bedrooms and fresh bathrooms — and, taken deep, of the most elegant reception rooms.
Our blue schemes run it alone or layered with mineral whites, warm brass and dark timber.
“Blue enlarges whatever it touches — rooms and ideas alike.”
Choosing a blue: from pale blue to midnight
Blue is the colour most dependent on orientation. In a south-facing room a candid blue stays luminous all day; facing north, the same blue can turn cold by three in the afternoon. The blues that carry a little grey or green — most of ours — are the ones that cope anywhere.
For a pale blue, Morning Blue No.32, Mews Blue No.98 and Mid Wedgwood No.113 keep their softness and work well in bedrooms. Wedgwood FTT-016 and Stockholm BH.11 give that very English porcelain blue, handsome on woodwork.
Among the mid and deep blues, Proper Blue No.67 is our most-used shade for kitchen cabinetry and bathrooms; Observatory No.34, Bridge Blue No.222, Bedford Square No.229 and Eaton Square No.232 make excellent living-room walls. To go deepest, look at Midnight FTT-017, Ultramarine Blue FTT-018 and Enamel Blue No.78 — night blues that hold lamplight beautifully. Ultra Violet FTT-019 tips blue over into violet.
