Primer & Undercoat - Purple
A high opacity, low odour, micro-porous, water thinned wall primer sealer displaying excellent adhesion to most existing finishes. For Marble Matt paints, we recommend the specialist wall primer; for our multi-surface paints, we recommend the multi-surface primer.
Understanding primer & undercoat
A well-prepared surface is the secret behind every beautifully finished wall. Here's everything you need to know about priming before you paint.
What is a primer & undercoat?
A primer & undercoat is the first coat applied to a bare or previously painted surface, before your chosen colour. It seals the substrate, evens out its texture and absorbency, and gives your topcoat a uniform, stable base to bond to.
Why it matters
Better adhesion
Primer grips onto raw plaster, wood, metal or old paint far better than a topcoat alone, so your colour stays put and resists flaking or peeling.
True depth of colour
Without it, porous or patchy surfaces drink up paint unevenly, dulling the finish. A primed wall lets Mylands' full pigment richness come through, coat after coat.
Even coverage, less paint used
A uniform base means fewer topcoats are needed to achieve full, even coverage - saving you paint, time and money.
How to apply it
Prepare the surface
Clean off dust, grease and any flaking material. Lightly sand glossy or uneven areas, then wipe down and allow to dry fully.
Apply the primer
Apply an even coat with a brush or roller, working in manageable sections. One coat is usually enough - allow 0.5 L of primer for every 1 L of topcoat colour.
Let it dry, then paint
Leave to dry for at least 2–4 hours (check the tin for guidance) before applying your first coat of colour, for the best possible finish.

Product data & safety sheets
Every Mylands paint is water-based and contains only trace levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) - far below what regulations allow. In practice, that means very little odour while you paint, quick drying between coats, and brushes and rollers that rinse clean in warm soapy water, with no need for white spirit.
Once fully dry, the finish is certified to EN 71-3:2019, the European toy-safety standard, so it can be used with confidence in nurseries, children's bedrooms and playrooms - even on painted toys, cots and furniture - and in homes with pets.
As with any paint, keep the room well ventilated while you work and let surfaces dry completely before children and animals return.
Mylands water-based paints are among the gentler decorative finishes you can bring into a home, but the usual common-sense precautions still apply:
- Keep paint out of the reach of children and away from food and drink.
- Ventilate the room well during application and drying.
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If paint gets into the eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and seek medical advice if irritation persists.
- If swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink plenty of water, then seek medical advice with the tin or label to hand.
- Like most water-based paints, the formulation contains small amounts of preservative, which may produce an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.
Store tins upright, tightly closed, somewhere cool and frost-free. Never pour leftover paint down the drain: allow residues to dry out, then take them - tin included - to your local household-waste collection point.
