Cosy November: Colour Ideas for the Snuggest Room in the House
As the clocks change and Bonfire Night lights up the dark, November is the season of the snug. Here's how to paint a room that begs you to hibernate.
There's a particular kind of comfort to November. The clocks have gone back, the evenings arrive early, and a bonfire glows against the cold, all of which makes us long for a room to burrow into. This is the season of the snug, and colour is what makes one. The instinct to keep small, dark rooms light and airy is exactly the wrong one here. Lean the other way: embrace deep, enveloping shades that make a space feel like a warm embrace. A rich Burlington Arcade™ No.216, an inky Mayfair Dark™ No.218, or the deep forest of Brompton Road™ No.205 wraps a room in cocooning warmth. Colour-drenching works its magic here, take one deep shade across the walls, ceiling and woodwork so the edges blur and the room feels smaller, softer and more intimate. Warm reds and browns are especially comforting as the fire crackles: Huguenot™ No.49, Arts Club™ No.281 or the earthy London Brown™ No.287 all glow beautifully by lamplight. To keep a dark scheme sumptuous rather than gloomy, choose a velvety matt finish, dim the lighting, and layer in tactile texture, chunky knits, wool throws, deep-pile rugs and plenty of candles. A well-placed lamp on a warm bulb, rather than a bright overhead, transforms the atmosphere entirely. Get it right and you'll create the kind of room you never want to leave, perfect for curling up with a book and a glass of something warming while the year winds down outside.
