Halloween at Home: Decorating with Dark, Dramatic Colour
You don't need cobwebs and plastic pumpkins to mark the season. A moody, dramatic paint colour brings all the atmosphere, and stays chic long after the 31st.
As the nights draw in and the end of October approaches, there's something irresistible about leaning into a little darkness at home. But you can capture Halloween's theatrical spirit without a single fake cobweb, real, lasting atmosphere comes from colour. The trick is to reach for deep, moody shades that feel dramatic and enveloping. A near-black like Blackout™ No.41, an inky Bond Street™ No.219, or the intense indigo of Observatory™ No.34 wraps a room in shadow and mystery, especially in a snug, cloakroom or dining room where you actually want that cocooning intimacy. For a subtler nod to the season, deep jewel tones do the theatrical work beautifully: a rich Empire Violet™ No.80, a blood-deep Arts Club™ No.281, or the forest depths of Pleasure Gardens Green™ No.214. Colour-drenching a small space, taking one dark shade across walls, ceiling and woodwork, is the quickest route to a genuinely spellbinding room. To style it for the season without commitment, add temporary touches: black taper candles, dried foliage, amber glass, a few pumpkins in muted heritage tones rather than bright plastic. When the metallic glow of gold or brass catches candlelight against a dark wall, the effect is pure gothic glamour. The beauty of this approach is that it doesn't expire on 1 November. Where inflatable decorations get boxed away, a beautifully painted dark room simply carries you into the cosy heart of autumn and winter, dramatic in October, snug by Christmas, and stylish all year round.
