Pink Outdoor Paint: The 2024 Exterior Trend

As the weather warms and the days stretch out, our attention turns to outdoor spaces. Whether yours is a sprawling garden, a paved courtyard or a terrace, there's ample opportunity to brighten it up. Decorating outdoors means using the right paint. Exterior paint covers masonry, wood and metal paints, plus wood stains and varnishes, and ours are formulated to be hard-wearing and durable, and can even be applied through an airless sprayer, so you'll find the ideal formulation for garden furniture, decking, a summerhouse or shed, other woodwork, railings and fences, and exterior walls and doors.

This year, more than ever, we're getting bolder with garden colour. Flowers aren't the only way to add variety, vibrancy and interest; among the many garden paint shades, the one guaranteed to bring cheer is pink.

Five ways to introduce pink to your outdoor area

A wholly pink house with matching garden accessories is a fairly niche ambition (unless you're Barbie, of course), but adding touches of warmth, happiness and natural freshness with a little pink exterior paint is a growing trend.

1. A warm pink front door

Changing your front door colour is an effective way to stamp your personality on your home, boosting kerb appeal and helping it stand out with a distinct splash of colour. A warm pink door feels welcoming and friendly, a vibrant contrast against a neutral exterior. People are often more comfortable with a bright door than with bold interiors, and a cheery pink door will make visitors and delivery drivers smile as they ring the bell.

2. A subtle pink shed

Move over white, beige and grey, subtle pink is our favourite new neutral, adding freshness and lightness outdoors, softer and warmer than pure white. Pale pink lifts a dark garden corner and makes a great backdrop for greenery; use it on an outbuilding like a shed, summerhouse or garage to give a drab structure new life. Inside might be a chaotic jumble of old spanners, hammers, hoses, power tools, stray screws and leftover emulsion, but the outside will look smart, stylish and attractive.

Not sure which pale pink suits your shed? Order a tester and choose from near-white to pastel, remembering the shade shifts as light levels change, so test it with and without exterior wall lights and at various times of day.

3. Bright pink garden furniture

Revive tired, dull furniture with colourful exterior paint; a strong accent like deep pink adds brightness, fun and liveliness all year round, and below the pink furniture stands out and cheers up a surrounding grey, neutral palette. Choose Mylands' Plant-Based Multi-Surface paint in your preferred finish, eggshell, satin, gloss or matt, durable and washable, essential for garden furniture, and the natural earth pigments make it richer in colour and eco-friendly too. Mylands' Mortlake Red™ No.290 (on the furniture below) exemplifies this perfectly, a rich, deep pink with red tones, almost terracotta, a wonderfully earthy shade suited to outdoor styling. Create a cosy seating area around a fire pit, or with heaters and blankets, to draw you outdoors all year, not just in barbecue season.

4. A floral pink wall

The colour of roses, peonies and cherry blossom, pink occurs naturally in a garden, so why not enhance it with more? Create a focal point by painting an exterior wall pink, a boundary wall, fence, trellis or the back of the house. Below, Mylands' Bloomsbury™ No.267 looks beautiful on the brick wall, bringing a rosy blush and an air of romance and sophistication.

Adding colour to one section defines zones for different activities, a dining area, relaxation area, workspace and play zone, each with its own style. Outdoor kitchens are increasingly popular, for instance; create a zone for the barbecue, pizza oven and worktop, then add shelves as you would indoors, both stylish and practical for herbs, cooking accessories and decorative candles.

5. A playful pink back door

If a statement front door feels too dramatic, have fun with the back door instead; the garden is for relaxing and socialising, so a playful pink is ideal. Our colours come in interior and exterior versions, so use touches of the same shade inside and out to encourage flow between spaces. Mylands' Pink House Pink™, on the door pictured, is a bespoke shade, perfect for anyone wanting individuality and an unapologetically pink colour.

Tips on updating your outdoor space

Mylands Plant-Based Multi-Surface paint is a water-based paint for interiors and exteriors, appropriate right across your outdoor space, from wooden cladding and metal furniture to fences, sheds, trellis, decking, iron railings and beyond. Painting garden woodwork is a relatively simple job with a transformative effect: breathe new life into shabby old furniture, add definition and personality to a fence, and instantly modernise a garden with bold colour. Here's how.

Filler: if your wooden furniture has soft or rotten spots, use filler and/or sealant to repair them. Priming: prepare the wood before painting, sanding off flaking paint and dusting before applying a primer, and yes, our primer comes in pink; leave it until touch dry, preferably overnight. Fence paint: with 30 pink and red shades on offer, you'll find the one for your home's exterior; rollers are ideal for fences while a small brush suits intricate furniture. Colour on a fence can be a game-changer: a dark shade looks stylish, frames the garden and helps plants stand out against it.

We offer a range of brushes and rollers for every painting need, so browse them before you start, and as ever our paints are better for the environment, water-based with very low VOC, adhesive-free, with natural earth pigments and plant-based properties. Which shade of pink will you choose? Shop our full range of Plant-Based Multi-Surface Paint or exterior Masonry Paint for brickwork, stone and render.
