Two-Colour Combinations for Bedroom Walls

Two-Colour Combinations for Bedroom Walls

How do you want to feel when you walk into your bedroom? Relaxed and zen? Uplifted and happy? Or perhaps you want your room to feel like pampered luxury? Your bedroom is your most personal space, so it needs to be comforting and soothing yet functional and practical, and the wall colours you choose should evoke exactly the right feelings.

Here's an idea that may help your palette: you don't have to stick to a single colour. Two-colour combinations work beautifully on bedroom walls. Sometimes one colour is simply too much, too enveloping, too dramatic or too dark, and adding a contrasting or complementary shade can create the perfect mix.

Soothing blue and white walls

This is a great way to bring colour to a white space; if an all-white room feels a little plain, add an accent wall in blue. Blue is wonderful for bedrooms, soothing, serene and very calming, and blue with white is a classic scheme you know will work, adding up to the tranquillity that's perfect for a good night's sleep.

Navy and crisp white make an ideal, grown-up, sophisticated scheme for a main bedroom. Below, Mylands' mid-blue Eaton Square™ No.232 brings warmth and glamour, and the teal blue isn't confined to the walls, carrying through to the headboard and cushions so the accent becomes a focal point in an otherwise white room.

Natural green and white walls

Here's a fresh idea: the bedroom is the one room where you lie back and gaze at the ceiling, so why not paint that fifth wall in your favourite colour? Natural greens create a comforting mood, just what you want in a sleep zone, and if you love the outdoors a green ceiling is a lovely idea, like waking under a leafy canopy without braving the elements. Teaming green with white adds lightness and contrast for a clean, fresh combination, the white letting the green have its moment; with so many greens to choose from, a muted shade feels more restful than a vibrant lime.

Dramatic red plus soft neutral walls

To stamp confident personality onto your walls, red is the best paint for a dramatic makeover. Mylands' Theatreland™ No.282 (below) is a deep, interesting shade, not a pure red but one blended with magenta for softness and complexity. A fully red bedroom can feel overwhelming, but pairing red with a soft neutral keeps the interest while easing the intensity, so use an off-white or earthy neutral like pale taupe as a contrast.

Two-colour schemes needn't mean painting one wall differently; you can combine both colours on a single wall. Below, the red sits only on the lower half, with the neutral above, which works especially well when you have panelling or a dado rail, since contrasting colours emphasise those features.

Vivid yellow and bright white

If ever a combination captured a sunny disposition, it's bright yellow and white, the colour of daisies, spring tulips and sunshine, and what could be more uplifting? Yellow injects positivity, and paired with white it shouts lightness and freshness, transforming a small, dark box room and enhancing any natural light. Yellow is versatile, from sunny bright to muted mustard, and while it works so well with white, as below with Mylands' Haymarket™ No.47, it also teams beautifully with darker tones and greys.

Fresh green and soft pink

Green and pink is a natural pairing, just picture how they sit together in nature, a peony's pink petals against green leaves, or an apple tree in blossom. Soft greens and pinks (or even lilac) combine to evoke gentle, comforting feelings, restful tones that set the ideal wind-down ambience and bring the well-known benefits of nature indoors. The avocado green on the walls below is Mylands' Stockwell Green™ No.203.

Uplifting sky blue and leafy green

Another earthy pairing, though more vibrant. Clear blue skies are such a mood-booster, so why not look up to a sky blue ceiling or upper wall, a positive, uplifting sight on waking? Pairing sky blue with leafy green is a natural winner, energising and unlikely to date on a child's walls as they grow, an unusual idea that makes perfect sense as a two-colour scheme.

Light blue and sunny yellow

This pastel pairing is warm and bright, the pale shades bouncing light around so the room feels fresher than it would with darker colours, ideal for a nursery or small child's room. They're traditional baby colours because they're fit for purpose, soft, playful and soothing, the lightness great for daytime play and the calm encouraging relaxation at sleep time. Mylands' Golden Square™ No.131 is the yellow below, its orange undertone adding warmth and playfulness to this golden shade.

Playful primary colours

Updating a room with a pop of bright colour like red completely shifts the feeling, adding vibrancy and perking up the space. Choose one element to transform, a shelving unit, wardrobe or alcove, a simple weekend job, and create a cosy nook with a deep, enveloping colour, perfect for curling up with a book.

Echo the accent elsewhere to tie it together, in artwork, patterned textiles or ornaments. Mylands' Red Post Hill™ No.68 and Enamel Blue™ No.78 are both classics, the blue serene, the postbox red bringing fun, reflecting how a bedroom works as both living space and sleeping area.

Choosing your bedroom's two-colour combination

Your bedroom is your personal space, so its décor should reflect you. Think about how you want to feel on waking and whenever you use the room, whether it's a calming sanctuary or a reflection of your vibrant personality. Once you've settled on the vibe, you can refine your two-colour scheme, and this blog should help you land on your best combination.
