Mylands has named Rose Taupe™ No.292 its Colour of the Year for 2022. Originally a British Colour Council shade, this deep brownish grey has a vintage character and carries bright yellow, red and black pigments, making it a timeless neutral that is also rich and atmospheric.
The colour belongs to our recently launched Archive Collection, a set of 12 shades drawn from our rich archive built over decades of colour expertise, yet with a timeless appeal for the modern world. It is wonderful for creating a relaxing, cosy and welcoming space, and equally at home as an accent against pale shades or as a way to soften bold, bright schemes. Its complex pigments give the colour a highly nuanced character, so it shifts subtly from one light to another.
In choosing our Colour of the Year we wanted to reflect current trends while selecting a shade that feels classic and natural. Demand for warmer tones has been rising in recent months, and Rose Taupe™ No.292 is a contemporary neutral that brings character to a room without dominating it.
This warm grey is a joy to work with, pairing effortlessly with everything from the softest pinks and blues to matt black. It flatters both cool and warm shades, which makes it a favourite among discerning decorators.

For those who prefer a pared-back neutral scheme, Rose Taupe™ No.292 works beautifully with other neutrals, soft pastels and off-whites. It also makes a great backdrop for bright hues such as sunny yellow or vivid orange, or for a striking monochrome palette. All told, it delivers a cocooning, stylish feel that is easy on the eye.

Dominic Myland said of the colour: "Rose Taupe is one of those sought-after shades that looks great in almost any space. It works in warm or cool schemes, modern or traditional, layered or pared back. Neutrals are always popular, but the warm neutral is the standout choice right now, and Rose Taupe is the perfect shade for a warm yet stylish home that feels of the moment but completely timeless. It's easy to use but impactful."
