10 paint colours for a bathroom

The bathroom is the room where people dare the most — it is small, you don't spend the day in it, and white tiles flatter any colour. It is also the room where the finish matters most, between steam and splashes.

Here are ten Mylands colours for a bathroom, from fresh whites to deep greens, with the finish to go with them.

10 paint colours for a bathroom

The short answer

For a bathroom, water blues and greens — Morning Blue No.32, Glass BH.09, Notting Hill No.213 — are the freshest; deep blue-greens — Eaton Square No.232, Market Green No.38 — the most enveloping. Apply them in Marble Matt Emulsion on dry walls and Multi-Surface Eggshell around the basin and bath.

Pure White — Bathroom
01

The clean white

Pure White™ No.1

  • White
  • White
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 91%

Our purest white: crisp, radiant, without undertone. It is the white of a bathroom you want bright and immaculate — it makes white tiles and marble sing, and it is at its best in a south-facing bathroom, where warm light keeps it from looking clinical. The ceiling and woodwork for every colour that follows.

Our tip — In a north-facing bathroom, prefer Sleet or Cotton Street, a touch softer.

02

The morning blue

Morning Blue™ No.32

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 65%

A clear sky blue, soft and luminous, with no grey to dim it — the colour of a bathroom on waking. It enlarges a small room like a white would, adding the freshness white lacks, and it stays warm in the evening thanks to a touch of warmth in its make-up. The blue of family bathrooms.

Our tip — With Lemon Salts on the ceiling, a lemon white: the cheeriest bathroom there is.

Glass — Bathroom
03

The water green

Glass BH.09

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • East light
  • LRV ≈ 66%

The colour of glass, according to Beata Heuman who designed it: a barely tinted water green between mint and blue, ethereal and crisp at once. It was made for a bathroom — it is the colour of clear water — and it is especially handsome on a ceiling, where it lends a feeling of height. With white marble and chrome it is perfect.

Our tip — Walls and ceiling in Glass, vanity unit in Damp Leaf: two greens, one spirit.

Notting Hill — Bathroom
04

The sea glass

Notting Hill™ No.213

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 54%

Between blue and sea-green, the colour of a glass pebble polished by the sea. Its green undertone makes it liveable in every light — it doesn't chill facing north — and it flatters pale timber, rattan and linen. A bathroom in Notting Hill has something of a seaside cabin, without the cliché.

Our tip — Woodwork in Cotton Street and a door in Bridge Blue: the summer bathroom.

05

The pale grey-green

Beaufort Gardens™ No.212

  • Neutral
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 60%

A pale neutral with a green-blue undertone, the colour of a grey pebble under water. It is more restrained than Glass or Notting Hill — almost a grey — which makes it the shade of elegant, sober bathrooms, the ones where marble and brass do the decorating. Superb with white towels and an old bath.

Our tip — A back wall in Market Green behind the bath, the rest in Beaufort Gardens.

06

The verdigris

Copper Green™ No.36

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 63%

Inspired by the patina on copper roofs: a pale green lifted with a touch of blue, fresh and light. In a small bathroom it has the advantage of being a colour that brightens — light enough to enlarge, coloured enough not to be a white. With white zellige and aged brass the pairing is perfect.

Our tip — Ceiling in Pure White for contrast, or in the same Copper Green for height.

07

The soft teal

Bridge Blue™ No.222

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 45%

A remarkably balanced mid blue-green, neither cold nor sweet — teal as it should always be. It is the bathroom colour most people warm to: it has enough depth to dress the walls of a windowless room, and enough light not to darken it. Superb with white and mid-toned timber.

Our tip — A windowless bathroom: Bridge Blue on the walls, Pure White on the ceiling, warm lamps.

Eaton Square — Bathroom
08

The deep blue-green

Eaton Square™ No.232

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 24%

A mid-deep blue-green, the colour of an aged teal, with a blue's seriousness and a green's warmth. It is our most asked-for bathroom colour for an enveloping scheme: on walls and vanity unit, with white marble and brass, it makes a hotel bathroom. It holds remarkably under artificial light.

Our tip — Vanity in satin Eaton Square, walls in matt Eaton Square: the monochrome that makes the difference.

Mad About The Bathroom — Bathroom
09

The bathroom grey-green

Mad About The Bathroom

  • Grey
  • Dark tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 9%

The name doesn't lie: a deep, muted, velvety grey-green created for this room. It is greyer than Eaton Square and softer than Market Green — a forest green seen through steam. On the walls of a bathroom with white sanitaryware it makes a jewel case; with timber and stone, a spa shower room.

Our tip — Ceiling in Sleet to keep the light; woodwork in the same shade, in satin.

10

The deepest

Market Green™ No.38

  • Neutral
  • Dark tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 7%

A deep water green, almost a dark petrol blue, named after London's markets. It is the colour of bathrooms you want truly enveloping — evening ones, with candles and a gilt mirror. By day it stays grave; under warm light it turns sumptuous. Superb with white marble and unlacquered brass taps.

Our tip — Walls, ceiling and vanity in Market Green: the complete jewel case, in a room with a window.

Painting a bathroom: colour and finish

The walls. Contrary to received wisdom, a bathroom is painted in matt: Marble Matt Emulsion is washable and breathable, and it lets the wall release moisture rather than trap it. It suits every wall that doesn't take direct splashes. Around the basin, the bath and in a walk-in shower, switch to Multi-Surface Eggshell, moisture-resistant, which wipes clean in one pass. The vanity unit, the door and the radiator are painted in Multi-Surface Satin.

Choosing by light and size

A windowless bathroom has no reason to be white: under constant artificial light, a mid colour such as Bridge Blue No.222 or Eaton Square No.232 is more flattering than a white that will look grey. A north-facing bathroom likes green-undertoned blues — Notting Hill No.213, Glass BH.09 — and avoids pure blues. A small bathroom grows with a light colour on walls and ceiling (Copper Green No.36, Morning Blue No.32) — or, conversely, becomes a jewel case with a deep colour everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which paint for bathroom walls?
Mylands Marble Matt Emulsion on walls away from splashes: matt, washable and breathable. Around the basin, the bath and in the shower, Multi-Surface Eggshell, which is moisture-resistant.
Which colour makes a small bathroom look bigger?
A light, fresh colour on walls and ceiling: Copper Green No.36, Morning Blue No.32 or Glass BH.09. Painting the ceiling the same shade as the walls removes the horizon line and gains height.
Which colour for a windowless bathroom?
A mid colour rather than a white, which would look grey under artificial light: Bridge Blue No.222, Eaton Square No.232 or Mad About The Bathroom, with a light ceiling and warm lamps.
Can a bathroom be painted a dark colour?
Yes, in a room with a window: Market Green No.38 or Eaton Square No.232 on walls, ceiling and vanity make an enveloping bathroom, superb with white marble and brass.
