10 blues for a bedroom

Blue is the colour most often recommended for sleep, and the most often chosen badly: too bright, it wakes you; too cold, it chills the bedroom from autumn on. The blues that truly calm carry a little grey or green — they look like a morning sky rather than a summer one.

Here are ten Mylands blues for a bedroom, from the mistiest to the deepest.

10 blues for a bedroom

The short answer

For a bedroom, prefer misty blues and grey-blues — Morning Blue No.32, Lambeth Walk No.210, Hawksmoor No.112 — which calm without chilling. For an enveloping bedroom, a deep, faintly violet blue such as Observatory No.34 is the gentlest on waking.

Walpole — Bedroom
01

The blue-tinged white

Walpole™ No.42

  • White
  • White
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 80%

Barely a blue: a white that has taken on the colour of the morning sky. It gives a bedroom the freshness of an aired room without making it a blue room, and it stays very bright — it is a white first. The right choice for a south- or west-facing bedroom, where a warm white would look too yellow at the end of the day.

Our tip — Walls in Walpole, ceiling and woodwork in Pure White: the freshest bedroom in the house.

The morning blue

Morning Blue™ No.32

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 65%

Our purest pale blue: a clear sky blue, soft and luminous, with no grey to dim it. It makes a bedroom that seems open to the outdoors, and it has a rare quality for a pale blue — it doesn't turn cold in the evening, thanks to a touch of warmth in its make-up. The blue of children's bedrooms that grow up well.

Our tip — Superb with blond timber and warm whites; avoid cold grey, which makes it sad.

03

The mist blue

Lambeth Walk™ No.210

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 58%

A greyed pale blue, like Morning Blue seen through mist. It is the most restful bedroom blue in the range: coloured enough to be a colour, grey enough to fade when you close your eyes. It carries white linen and dark timber beautifully, and suits a north-facing bedroom as well as a south-facing one.

Our tip — Walls, ceiling and woodwork all in Lambeth Walk: a cloud of a bedroom.

Hawksmoor — Bedroom
04

The grey-blue

Hawksmoor™ No.112

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 55%

A pale blue-grey with a green undertone, named after the architect of London's great baroque churches. It has the restraint of a grey and the softness of a blue, and it is perhaps the most 'grown-up' of our bedroom blues: it doesn't say 'blue bedroom', it simply says calm. Very handsome with brass and unbleached fabrics.

Our tip — A headboard painted in Eaton Square on Hawksmoor walls: two blues, one spirit.

Bedroom with purple accents and aqua blue contrasts, white bedding, and a desk with a vase of flowers.
05

The pale blue-green

Notting Hill™ No.213

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 54%

Between blue and sea-green, the colour of a glass pebble polished by the sea. That green undertone is what makes it so liveable in a bedroom: it never chills, even facing north, and it flatters pale timber and rattan. A bedroom in Notting Hill has something of a seaside house, without the cliché.

Our tip — With Cotton Street woodwork and a door in Bridge Blue: the summer bedroom par excellence.

Greenwich Time — Bedroom
06

The soft blue-white

Greenwich Time™ No.8

  • White
  • White
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 82%

A very faintly blue-grey white, softer and greyer than Walpole. It is the ideal white for a bedroom you want bright and fresh with no risk of colour whatsoever: on the card you take it for a white, on the walls it refreshes. Excellent on a ceiling above a stronger blue.

Our tip — A Greenwich Time ceiling above walls in Lambeth Walk or Bedford Square.

Cosy sky blue bedroom with a bed, tray with tea set, and decorative pillows.
07

The mid blue

Bedford Square™ No.229

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 46%

A true, luminous mid blue, named after London's finest Georgian square. It is more assertive than the pale blues on this list, but its grey always holds it on the calm side. In a bedroom it makes a magnificent ground for whites — sheets, woodwork, ceiling — and turns porcelain blue in the evening.

Our tip — Woodwork in Charterhouse, a cool white that keeps it fresh; ceiling in Greenwich Time.

Grey blue room interior with a fireplace, mirror, wardrobe, and bed.
08

The mid blue-green

Bridge Blue™ No.222

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 45%

A softened teal — greener than Bedford Square, deeper than Notting Hill — remarkably balanced. It is the bedroom blue that pleases most people: neither cold nor sweet, and it takes floral fabrics as well as plain linen. In north light its green keeps it warm.

Our tip — The headboard wall in Bridge Blue, the other three in Notting Hill: depth without darkness.

Stockholm — Bedroom
09

The Scandinavian blue

Stockholm BH.11

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 28%

Drawn by Beata Heuman from the façades of her home town: a mid-deep blue, grey and a little green, with the softness of eighteenth-century Swedish interiors. It is deeper than the blues above but keeps plenty of light, and it ages with a patina few blues have. A bedroom in Stockholm is a successful winter bedroom.

Our tip — With Beata White woodwork and a Chalk ceiling: the Beata Heuman palette complete.

Observatory — Bedroom
10

The night blue

Observatory™ No.34

  • Blue
  • Dark tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 11%

For an enveloping bedroom: a deep blue-grey sliding towards violet, the colour of the sky an hour after sunset. Its hint of violet makes it warm — the deep blue gentlest on waking, and the most beautiful under a bedside lamp. Paint the ceiling too; a half-painted dark bedroom never works.

Our tip — Colour-drenched in Multi-Surface Dead Matt, white sheets and warm lamps.

Choosing a blue that helps you sleep

The science is on our side: blue is the colour most associated with calm, and blue bedrooms are where people report sleeping best. But not all blues are equal. A saturated blue — royal, turquoise — stimulates; a greyed blue soothes. Almost all our bedroom blues carry grey or green, and that is deliberate.

By orientation

A north-facing bedroom chills pure blues: choose green-undertoned blues there — Notting Hill No.213, Bridge Blue No.222, Hawksmoor No.112 — or a deep violet blue such as Observatory No.34. A south- or west-facing bedroom takes candid blues: Morning Blue No.32, Bedford Square No.229, Walpole No.42. An east-facing bedroom, golden on waking, suits every blue on this list.

The white that goes with it

A bedroom blue is judged with its woodwork and ceiling. Pale blues like clean, cool whites — Charterhouse No.4, Cotton Street No.3, Greenwich Time No.8. Deep blues prefer a warm white — Maugham White No.2, Holland Park No.5 — that stops them looking black. Which white with a bedroom blue?
A cool white — Charterhouse No.4, Cotton Street No.3 — with a pale blue; a warm white — Maugham White No.2, Holland Park No.5 — with a deep blue.
