10 greens for a bathroom

Green is the natural colour of a bathroom — the colour of water, wet leaves, thick glass. It goes with the white of tiles and sanitaryware like no other colour, it flatters chrome and brass, and it turns an often tiny room into a place you want to stay in.

Here are ten Mylands greens for a bathroom, from the palest water green to the dark green that gives this guide its name.

10 greens for a bathroom

The short answer

For a bathroom, the pale water greens — Glass BH.09, Copper Green No.36, Beaufort Gardens No.212 — enlarge and refresh; the greyed mid greens — Museum No.151, Sprig JB.06 — add character without closing in; the deep greens — Mad About The Bathroom, Market Green No.38, Deep Green FTT-012 — make a jewel-box bathroom. On dry walls in Marble Matt Emulsion, around the shower in eggshell.

Glass — Bathroom
01

The water green

Glass BH.09

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • East light
  • LRV ≈ 66%

The colour of thick glass seen edge-on, according to Beata Heuman who designed it: a barely tinted water green between mint and blue, ethereal and crisp. It is the bathroom green par excellence — the colour of clear water — and it is especially handsome on a ceiling, where it gives the impression of an underwater height. With white marble and chrome nothing beats it.

Our tip — Walls and ceiling in Glass, woodwork in Beata White: the freshest bathroom there is.

02

The pale verdigris

Copper Green™ No.36

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 63%

A pale greyed green, the colour of oxidised copper on a roof — hence its name. It is softer and greener than Glass, less blue, and it gives a bathroom the freshness of an old room. It is at its best in a bright bathroom, where sunlight turns it almost white, and it loves brass, which picks up the copper note.

Our tip — With brass taps and white tiles with grey grout: the bathroom of a country house.

Off-white bathroom with wooden vanity, white countertop, and decorative elements.
03

The garden grey-green

Beaufort Gardens™ No.212

  • Neutral
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 60%

A pale grey tinted with bluish green, the colour of a sage leaf in the rain. It is greyer than Copper Green, and therefore easier in a north-facing bathroom, where a proper green would look cold. It makes a calm ground for an everyday bathroom, and it grows greener as the light fades.

Our tip — Ceiling in Syon Park, a green-tinged white, for a tone-on-tone match.

Mews Blue — Bathroom
04

The mews blue-green grey

Mews Blue™ No.98

  • Grey
  • Pale tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 64%

Between grey, blue and green, the colour of a repainted stable door — fresh, calm, a little old. In a bathroom it is the ideal compromise between the green you want and the grey you dare: tinted enough for the room to have a colour, grey enough never to tire. With white metro tiles it is the green of townhouse bathrooms.

Our tip — Woodwork in Sleet rather than pure white: the whole stays soft.

Museum — Bathroom
05

The mid grey-green

Museum™ No.151

  • Grey
  • Mid tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 42%

A mid grey plainly tinted with green, the colour of old gallery walls — hence its name. It is deep enough for a white bathroom finally to have a colour, grey enough not to become a hospital green, and it makes the white of the sanitaryware stand out the way a mount sets off a print.

Our tip — Vanity unit in Brompton Road beneath Museum walls: two grey-greens answering each other.

Sprig — Bathroom
06

The tender green

Sprig JB.06

  • Green
  • Mid tone
  • East light
  • LRV ≈ 50%

A soft, yellowed mid green, the colour of a young shoot — designed by the landscape designer Jinny Blom. It is the cheeriest green in this guide, the one that turns a bathroom into a conservatory, and it is superb in a bright room with plants, pale wood and white. In a dark bathroom it loses a little of its glow: prefer Museum there.

Our tip — With a bath painted in Damp Leaf and plenty of plants: the greenhouse bathroom.

Mylands Bridge Blue No. 222 - Bathroom interior with a sink, mirror, and towel rack.
07

The Thames blue-green

Bridge Blue™ No.222

  • Blue
  • Mid tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 45%

A greyed mid blue-green, the colour of the Thames on a sunny day — neither truly blue nor truly green. In a bathroom it is the colour of deep water, and it is more enveloping than the pale greens while staying luminous. With white tiles and chrome it makes a boat's bathroom.

Our tip — Ceiling in Walpole, a bluish white: the room looks taller and fresher.

Mad About The Bathroom — Bathroom
08

The green named after the room

Mad About The Bathroom

  • Grey
  • Dark tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 9%

A dark greyed green, deep as river water in shade, named after the room it was made for. It is the green of a jewel-box bathroom: on every wall it envelops, and makes the white of the bath and the brass of the taps glow. In a small windowless bathroom it is lovelier than a white that would make it sad.

Our tip — Walls, ceiling and cabinet in Mad About The Bathroom, white bath, brass: the most photographed bathroom.

Modern bathroom interior with dark green wall, mirror, and sink.
09

The deep blue-green

Market Green™ No.38

  • Neutral
  • Dark tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 7%

A very dark green leaning to blue, the colour of an old market shopfront. Bluer than Mad About The Bathroom, it has a night-time freshness that goes wonderfully with water and white, and it turns a bathroom into a place where baths are taken by candlelight. Superb with green tiles and aged brass.

Our tip — Dado in Market Green beneath Glass walls: dark below, pale above, the room grows.

Deep Green — Bathroom
10

The emerald green

Deep Green FTT-012

  • Green
  • Dark tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 17%

A saturated, bright and joyful blue-green, the most luminous of our deep greens. In a bathroom it gives the sparkle of a palace pool or a hammam: with white marble, brass and a big mirror it is a room for celebration. It was made for a bathroom with light and guests to impress.

Our tip — A gloss Deep Green door in a neutral hallway announces the bathroom before it is opened.

Choosing a green for a bathroom

The bathroom is small, often windowless, and white by nature — tiles, sanitaryware, bath. Green has two possible roles there. Pale, it refreshes and enlarges without taking any light: that is the role of Glass BH.09, Copper Green No.36 or Beaufort Gardens No.212, which can go on every wall and even the ceiling. Deep, it envelops and stages: Mad About The Bathroom, Market Green No.38 or Deep Green FTT-012 turn the smallest bathroom into a jewel box, provided you commit and light it well.

By light

A north-facing or windowless bathroom prefers greyed greens — Beaufort Gardens No.212, Mews Blue No.98, Museum No.151 — or frankly dark ones, which don't depend on sunshine. A south-facing bathroom can take the freshest and brightest greens: Glass BH.09, Sprig JB.06, Deep Green FTT-012.

The finish, without compromise

On the dry walls and ceiling of a ventilated bathroom, breathable, washable Marble Matt Emulsion. Around the shower, bath and basin, moisture-resistant Multi-Surface Eggshell. The vanity unit and door in Multi-Surface Satin. The detail is in which finish for a bathroom?.

Frequently asked questions

Which green for a small bathroom?
A pale water green — Glass, Copper Green, Beaufort Gardens — on every wall and the ceiling enlarges the room; conversely, a deep green such as Mad About The Bathroom on every surface makes a jewel box of it. Both work; a mid green on a single wall is the least successful.
Which green for a windowless bathroom?
A greyed green that doesn't depend on sunshine — Beaufort Gardens, Mews Blue, Museum — or a committed dark green with good lighting: Mad About The Bathroom, Market Green.
Does green go with white tiles?
Better than any colour: the white of the tiles sets off the green, and the green makes the white look cleaner. Choose the green by the room's light, not by the tiles.
Which finish for a green in a bathroom?
Marble Matt Emulsion on the dry walls and ceiling of a ventilated bathroom; Multi-Surface Eggshell around the shower, bath and basin; Multi-Surface Satin on the cabinet and door.
