Which finish for a bedroom?

The bedroom is the calmest room in the house, and the only one looked at lying down, by the light of a bedside lamp. What is asked of it is not to resist knocks but to stay soft: no reflections, no smell, a colour that looks like a material rather than a paint.

Here is how to share the Mylands finishes out in a bedroom, and why matt rules there more than anywhere.

Which finish for a bedroom?

The short answer

In a bedroom, Marble Matt Emulsion on the walls and ceiling, without hesitation: a velvet matt, no reflection, low odour. For the doors, skirtings and windows, Multi-Surface Satin or, softer, eggshell. For a cocoon bedroom where everything is in the same shade, Multi-Surface Dead Matt on every surface; for a painted headboard or wardrobe, eggshell.

Marble Matt Emulsion

Pigment-rich depth with a velvet-matte soul

  • Very Matt
  • Washable
  • Scrubbable & Scuff Resistant
  • Class 1 scrub resistance — EN 13300
  • V1 High breathability — EN 1062-1

Suitable for
Interior Walls & Ceilings · Bathrooms

Our signature wall finish, formulated with crushed Carrara marble. It offers an unrivaled 15m² coverage per litre with a breathable, scrubbable surface that brings a rich, limestone-soft depth to any room. Independently rated at the highest scrub resistance (Class 1 — EN 13300) and the top breathability class (V1 High — EN 1062-1 / ISO 7783), it stands up to daily cleaning while letting walls breathe.

Our signature wall finish, with crushed Carrara marble, was made for a bedroom: a velvet matt that absorbs the light of a bedside lamp rather than throwing it back, and gives soft colours — a powder pink, a lavender grey, a pale blue — the depth of a material. It is low-VOC and almost odourless, so the bedroom can be slept in the same night. And it washes, which matters for a child's room.

Our tip — Ceiling in the same shade as the walls, or a notch lighter: a bedroom without a horizon line is more restful.

The cocoon bedroom

Multi-Surface Dead Matt Paint

An ultra-flat, sophisticated heritage finish

  • Very Matt
  • Multi-Surface
  • Washable
  • Scrubbable & Scuff Resistant

Suitable for
Interior Walls & Ceilings · Interior & Exterior Woodwork · Interior & Exterior Metalwork & Radiators

A 5% sheen level dual-purpose paint designed for flawless 'colour drenching'. This environmentally conscious formula provides a completely flat, non-reflective finish across furniture, radiators, and woodwork.

A dead matt (5%) that goes on walls, ceiling, woodwork and radiators with the same non-reflective look. It is the finish of the colour-drenched bedroom — a single deep shade from floor to ceiling, doors included — where you sleep better because the eye no longer finds an outline. It is tougher than emulsion, which also allows it on the walls behind a bed or a teenager's desk.

Our tip — Rose Taupe, Oratory or Observatory everywhere, white sheets: the bedroom you sleep best in.

Doors, skirtings, windows, radiator

Multi-Surface Satin Paint

A lustrous, silk-spun finish for refined details

  • Mid Sheen
  • Multi-Surface
  • Washable
  • Scrubbable & Scuff Resistant
  • Moisture Resistant

Suitable for
Interior & Exterior Woodwork · Metalwork & Radiators · Kitchens & Bathrooms

A mid-sheen masterpiece that provides a smooth, resilient coating. Perfect for accentuating architectural details, it offers a sophisticated luster that stands up to the rigours of modern living.

A smooth, hard-wearing mid-sheen for everything in wood or metal. In a bedroom its role is discreet: to draw the door and skirtings with a light lustre beneath matt walls, and to stand up to the only thing that damages a bedroom — the door opened and closed twice a day, the window that takes the condensation. In a warm white or the wall shade.

Our tip — Woodwork in satin Holbein Chamber beneath walls in Early Lavender or Smithfield: the pinkish white that doesn't cut.

Headboard, wardrobe, chest, panelling

Multi-Surface Eggshell Paint

Luminous low-sheen for effortless elegance

  • Low Sheen
  • Multi-Surface
  • Washable
  • Scrubbable & Scuff Resistant
  • Moisture Resistant

Suitable for
Interior & Exterior Walls · Interior & Exterior Woodwork · Interior & Exterior Metalwork & Radiators

A versatile 15% sheen finish that strikes a perfect balance between durability and soft luminosity. Ideal for interior and exterior transformations where a gentle, silk-like glow is desired.

A soft sheen (15%) that gives painted furniture the look of an old paint, and the gentlest of our sheens for a bedroom. It was made for everything painted in a bedroom other than the walls: a wooden headboard, a second-hand wardrobe, a chest of drawers, half-height panelling. It is also the best choice for the woodwork of an old bedroom, whose flaws it forgives.

Our tip — Wardrobe in eggshell Sorrel Green or Eaton Square on a pale wall: the furniture becomes the bedroom's colour.

Before: new plaster and filled walls

Wall Primer

The perfect base for plaster and lining paper

Suitable for
Interior Walls & Ceilings

A micro-porous sealing primer for interior walls and ceilings, formulated to even out porous or repaired plaster and reduce the risk of visible joins under lining paper. Because it is micro-porous it keeps walls breathable under Marble Matt Emulsion. For interior walls only; on lime plaster use Stabilising Primer instead.

A bedroom is often the last room to be renovated, on walls that have seen thirty years of wallpaper and filler. Wall primer seals porous or repaired plaster, evens out absorption and prevents flat or shiny patches beneath the emulsion. One coat, dry in a few hours, that gives the velvet matt all its evenness.

Our tip — On a wall just stripped of its wallpaper: wash off the paste, let it dry, prime.

Matt, and why

In a bedroom the light comes from low down — a bedside lamp, a wall light — and strikes the walls at a raking angle. A sheen, even a soft one, creates reflections there that follow the eye and tire it. The velvet matt of Marble Matt Emulsion absorbs that light and gives the walls the look of a material — plaster, linen, stone — that soothes. That is why we never recommend a sheen on bedroom walls, even for ease of cleaning: the emulsion already washes.

The child's bedroom

Same rule, with one more argument: the emulsion is washable, low-VOC and almost odourless, so the child can sleep in the room the same evening it is painted. On hard-worked walls — behind a bed, around a door — Multi-Surface Dead Matt is a notch tougher, still matt. Our colours for that room are in our soft colours for a child's bedroom.

Smell and drying

All our finishes are water-based and low in VOCs. A bedroom painted in emulsion in the morning can be occupied that night, window ajar; allow one more night for woodwork in satin.

Frequently asked questions

Which paint finish for a bedroom?
A matt on walls and ceiling — Mylands Marble Matt Emulsion, velvety, reflection-free and washable — and a sheen on the woodwork: Multi-Surface Satin or, softer, Multi-Surface Eggshell.
Can you sleep in a freshly painted bedroom?
With a water-based, low-VOC emulsion such as Marble Matt Emulsion, yes, the same night, window ajar. Allow one more night for woodwork in satin.
Which finish for a child's bedroom?
Marble Matt Emulsion, washable and almost odourless, on the walls; tougher Multi-Surface Dead Matt on the hardest-worked walls; eggshell on painted furniture.
Do bedroom walls need a sheen to be cleanable?
No: Marble Matt Emulsion washes while staying matt. A sheen would create reflections under the raking light of bedside lamps.
