10 soft paint colours for a child's bedroom

A child's bedroom needn't be candy pink or baby blue to be a child's bedroom. The loveliest are those that grow with the child: a soft, slightly old-fashioned colour that suits a cot, a seven-year-old's bed and a fifteen-year-old's desk, and lets the toys, drawings and books provide the colour.

Here are ten soft Mylands colours for a child's bedroom — powder pinks, sky blues, tender greens and butter yellows — that tire neither the children nor the parents.

Palmerston Pink — Childbedroom
01

The barely-pink pink

Palmerston Pink™ No.243

  • Red
  • White
  • West light
  • LRV ≈ 77%

A pinkish white, so pale one hesitates to call it pink — the colour of the inside of a seashell. It is the child's-bedroom pink that never dates: soft over a cot, discreet behind a teenager's bed, and it warms morning light without ever looking "princess". With white and pale wood it is perfect.

Our tip — Walls and ceiling in Palmerston Pink, woodwork in Pure White: the softest nursery.

02

The peach pink

Gentleman’s Pink™ No.221

  • Orange
  • Pale tone
  • West light
  • LRV ≈ 71%

A pale pink leaning to peach, warm and a little old-fashioned in the best sense — the colour of a gentleman's shirt, hence its name. It has more presence than Palmerston Pink without being sugary, and its touch of orange makes it possible for a boy as well as a girl. It is superb with deep greens and blues.

Our tip — A bed or wardrobe painted in Eaton Square on Gentleman's Pink walls: the pairing that grows up well.

Morning Blue — Childbedroom
03

The sky blue

Morning Blue™ No.32

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 65%

A clear, soft sky blue, the colour of a summer morning — the child's-bedroom blue par excellence, and one of the most cheerful. It enlarges a small bedroom, it calms, and it goes with every toy. A touch of warmth in its make-up keeps it from being cold, even in a north-facing bedroom. On the ceiling too, for a sky.

Our tip — Ceiling in Morning Blue, walls in Pure White: the bedroom has a sky.

Lambeth Walk — Childbedroom
04

The calm grey-blue

Lambeth Walk™ No.210

  • Blue
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 58%

A pale, greyed blue, calmer than Morning Blue, the colour of a hazy morning sky. It is the blue to choose for a child's bedroom that must also be a room for sleeping well: less cheerful, more restful. It grows up particularly well — it is already a grown-up blue — and it is very handsome with dark wood and white.

Our tip — For the bedroom of a child who finds it hard to fall asleep.

Glass — Childbedroom
05

The water green

Glass BH.09

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • East light
  • LRV ≈ 66%

A barely tinted water green between mint and blue, ethereal and crisp. It is the freshest colour in this guide, and one of the most neutral: neither pink nor blue, it suits every child and every age, and it makes a bedroom a bright, calm place, like a room by the water. Superb with white, pale wood and rattan.

Our tip — Glass on walls and ceiling, Beata White on the woodwork: the bedroom that breathes.

Copper Green — Childbedroom
06

The greyed tender green

Copper Green™ No.36

  • Green
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 63%

A pale, greyed green, soft as a sage leaf, warmer than Glass. It is the green of a country-house child's bedroom: soothing, a little old-fashioned, and perfect with floral fabrics, painted wood and linen. It never looks cold, even in a north-facing bedroom, and it suits three-year-olds as well as thirteen-year-olds.

Our tip — With a bed painted in Sorrel Green and floral curtains: the cottage bedroom.

Floral Street — Childbedroom
07

The primrose yellow

Floral Street™ No.147

  • Yellow
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 78%

A pale, creamy yellow, the colour of a primrose, cheerful without being bright. It is the yellow that can go on all four walls of a child's bedroom without tiring anyone: it gives sunshine to a north-facing bedroom, makes an east-facing one dazzling in the morning, and goes with every blue, every green and every grey. A good-mood colour.

Our tip — For a north-facing child's bedroom, with white and touches of a proper blue.

Hurlingham — Childbedroom
08

The soft yellow-green

Hurlingham™ No.181

  • Yellow
  • Pale tone
  • South light
  • LRV ≈ 63%

A pale yellow leaning to green, the colour of a spring shoot or a faded lime. It is calmer than Floral Street and more original — neither yellow nor green, exactly between the two — and it makes a fresh, cheerful child's bedroom that looks like no other. It loves white, pale wood and touches of pink.

Our tip — With touches of Gentleman's Pink — a cushion, a chair — the most springlike pairing.

Early Lavender — Childbedroom
09

The grey lilac

Early Lavender™ No.260

  • Grey
  • Pale tone
  • North light
  • LRV ≈ 63%

A pale grey shot with mauve, so discreet it passes for a white until a white is set beside it. It is the child's-bedroom purple for those who don't like purple: the softness of a lilac with nothing candy about it, and a calm particularly suited to sleep. It grows up very well — it is also one of our favourite grown-up bedroom greys.

Our tip — Ceiling in Osterley, a pinkish white, so as not to break the softness.

10

The peach white, for a neutral ground

Kensington Rose™ No.22

  • Orange
  • White
  • West light
  • LRV ≈ 81%

A warm, faintly pink white, the colour of a shell, for those who want a bright child's bedroom without the cold white of a hospital. It makes a soft ground for coloured toys, patterned curtains and a painted bed, and it stays warm in a north-facing bedroom. It is the colour to choose when you don't want to choose — and it is lovely.

Our tip — Kensington Rose on the walls, a door or bed in Morning Blue or Sorrel Green: the colour comes from the furniture.

Choosing a colour for a child's bedroom

Three principles. Pale rather than bright: a bright colour on four walls excites and tires; a pale one soothes, and lets the toys, books and drawings be the bright colours. A colour that grows up: a candy pink has three years of life, a powder pink fifteen. Every colour in this guide was chosen to suit a cot as well as a sixth-former's desk. Colour on the furniture: a bed, a wardrobe or a door painted in a stronger shade — Sorrel Green No.207, Eaton Square No.232, Proper Blue No.67 — gives soft walls character, and can be repainted in an afternoon when the child changes their mind.

By light

A north-facing child's bedroom prefers warm colours — Floral Street No.147, Kensington Rose No.22, Gentleman's Pink No.221, Copper Green No.36. A south-facing one can take the coolest — Glass BH.09, Morning Blue No.32, Lambeth Walk No.210. An east-facing bedroom, bright in the morning, is handsome in yellow or tender green.

Finish and safety

Marble Matt Emulsion on walls and ceiling: washable — finger and felt-tip marks sponge off — low-VOC and almost odourless, so the child can sleep in the room the same night. On hard-worked walls, tougher Multi-Surface Dead Matt; on painted furniture, eggshell. All our products are water-based and low in VOCs.

Bright colour goes on the furniture, not the walls.

Which paint is safe for a child's bedroom?
A water-based, low-VOC, almost odourless paint such as Mylands Marble Matt Emulsion. The child can sleep in the room the same night it is painted, window ajar.
