Decorating ideas & inspiration in yellow
From straw to saffron, this is the colour that manufactures sunshine: precious in windowless halls, generous in kitchens, unexpected and charming in a bedroom.
Our yellow schemes measure it out, from a bright thread to a radiant plane.
“Yellow is a window you paint yourself.”
Choosing a yellow: from cream to candid yellow
Yellow is the colour that manufactures light where there isn't any. That is why it succeeds so often in rooms without a generous window — hallways, stairwells, sculleries — and equally why you should be wary of very pure yellows in a room already flooded with sun, where they turn dazzling.
For a soft yellow, Cavendish Cream No.120, Bone BH.04, Lemon Salts No.43 and Floral Street No.147 are creams and fresh butters that behave almost like warm whites: ideal in living spaces. Hurlingham No.181 steps up slightly in intensity while staying very liveable.
For a candid yellow, Cornhill No.128 and London Plane No.200 are our most successful ochres in entrance halls, while Circle Line No.45 brings a bright, cheerful yellow best measured onto a door or a piece of furniture. On the yellow-green side, Verdure Yellow No.148, New Lime No.149 and Boiled Dill BH.22 give sharp, acid shades that look superb against deep greens.
