About Mylands

Six generations, one city of manufacture and a royal warrant: here are the questions we are asked most often about the company, its products and its commitments.

The company

Who are Mylands?

Mylands is Britain's oldest family-owned paint and wood finish manufacturer, established in London in 1884. Six generations of the Myland family have run it, from John Myland supplying Victorian cabinetmakers to Dominic and Harvey Myland today.

The company makes decorative paints for interior and exterior use, primers and undercoats, and a full range of wood finishes - oils, waxes, stains, varnishes and lacquers. You can read our history or find out more about the company.

Where are your paints made?

In London, at our West Norwood factory south of the Thames - the last paint factory in the British capital. Pigments are weighed there, binders prepared, every colour checked, then the tins filled and labelled on site. Nothing is contract-manufactured: what carries the Mylands name leaves our own walls.

What is the Royal Warrant?

It is the grant of appointment as an official supplier to the British Royal Household. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II granted it to Mylands in 1985; His Majesty King Charles III has since renewed it. Mylands is today the only British manufacturer of decorative paints and polishes to hold it.

It is not merely an honour: every holder must continuously evidence the provenance of its raw materials, impeccable quality and a credible path to net zero.

Why do film and television studios use your paints?

Because we have supplied them since 1928. Our order books carry formulations supplied to British Lion and London Films from that year, and an order for special thinners from Warner Bros in 1939. Our Film, TV & Theatre division develops high-opacity scenic paints, glazes and flame-retardant finishes that meet studio standards.

Those technical products, proven under studio lighting, feed back into the quality of our decorative paints.

Are you present in France?

Yes. Mylands is operated under licence in France, with a warehouse in Occitanie, near Toulouse, from which all orders to mainland France are shipped. Orders placed before 2.30pm Monday to Friday leave the same day. We do not have a showroom open to the public in France: the free colour card and sample pots are designed to let you judge a colour at home.

Our products

What makes your paints different?

The pigment load. Our Marble Matt Emulsion contains more pigment than any other paint in our catalogue, plus ground Carrara marble: the colour gains a depth and density you can see with the naked eye, and the opacity cuts the number of coats needed.

Add to that a hundred and forty years of recipes: our colours have been archived since 1884, which means a shade can be reproduced exactly years later.

Are your paints washable?

Yes, most of our finishes - including Marble Matt Emulsion - are washable and take gentle scrubbing, which makes them suited to hallways, stairwells, kitchens and family homes. Wait for the film to cure fully, two to four weeks after application, before any firm cleaning.

What are your paints made from?

Natural earth and mineral pigments for colour, fillers and binders - including ground Carrara marble in our matt emulsion - and a water base. These water-based formulations are low in volatile organic compounds.

Do your paints smell strongly?

Very little. Our paints are water-based and low in VOCs: the smell is far more discreet than a solvent-based paint, and it clears quickly with normal ventilation.

How many colours do you offer?

Our signature collections bring together 172 exclusive colours, including our London-inspired palettes and the iconic shades from our film and television work. Browse them in the digital colour card, or have the physical colour card sent to you free of charge.

Our commitments

Are your products environmentally responsible?

We work at it on several fronts: naturally derived fillers and binders, water-based formulations low in VOCs, made-to-order manufacture that limits unsold stock and waste, and production concentrated on a single London site, which cuts intermediate transport.

What is Planet Mark?

An internationally recognised sustainability certification that requires a business to measure and genuinely reduce its carbon footprint, year on year - not simply to state an intention. It places holders in a network of organisations committed to the same goals.

Are your paints low-VOC?

Yes. Our paints are water-based and formulated from natural ingredients, which keeps volatile organic compounds low: better air quality during and after decorating, and rooms back in use sooner.

What should I do with empty tins?

A completely empty, dry tin goes with your packaging recycling. A tin with paint still in it is hazardous household waste: take it to a household waste recycling centre, and never empty it into the drain or the general rubbish.
