Stair paint: which finish, what preparation, which colours

For a stair paint that lasts, use Decorative Floor Satin on treads and risers, Multi-Surface Eggshell or Satin on the handrail and spindles, and prepare the wood with care. Two coats, a few days of patience, and dark treads over pale risers to hide the wear.

The right panelling paint is a multi-surface finish: eggshell for a bathroom, hallway or bedroom, satin for a busy corridor, dead matt to paint panelling and wall in a single colour. On varnished pine, a light sanding and a primer make all the difference.

The right home office paint is a mid-tone, grey-green or grey-blue, applied in matt: it rests the eye when it leaves the screen, reflects neither window nor lamp, and gives a clean, flattering background on video calls. Overall BH.10, Long Acre No.102 and Riverine JB.07 are our first choices.

Bedroom paint colours: which shades help you sleep

The best bedroom paint colours are soft, greyed shades, lavender, grey-blue or smoky green, or at the other extreme a deep indigo or plum that wraps around you, applied in a washable, low-VOC matt. Early Lavender No.260, Uncle Maths BH.05 and Observatory No.34 are our three starting points.
